"I Am Me" By Virginia Satir

Ever since my first encounter with her writing I have loved Virginia Satir. Maybe it was because she came at the end of a long line of stuff and scientific male theorists in my Systems Theory class. Or maybe it was because her words were the soothing message I have always needed to hear. Whatever the reason, she is in me now. In me when I speak to children. In me when I see the child inside an adult. In me at parties and at yoga class. Where ever I go I can take her, kind of like a large loveable version of Jiminy Cricket, chirping words of love and self-acceptance in my ear. So I thought I would give to you, some of her words to carry with you.

In all the world,
there is no one else exactly like me -
everything that comes out of me is authentically mine,
because I alone choose it - I own everything about me - my body, my feelings, my mouth, my voice, all my actions,
whether they be to others or to myself -
I own my fantasies, my dreams, my hopes, my fears -
I own all my triumphs and successes, all my failures and mistakes. Because I own all of me, I can become intimately acquainted with me - by so doing I can love me and be friendly with me in all my parts -
I know there are aspects about myself that puzzle me,
and other aspects that I do not know -
but as long as I am friendly and loving to myself,
I can courageously and hopefully look for solutions to the puzzles and for ways to find out more about me -
However I look and sound, whatever I say and do,
and whatever I think and feel at a given moment in time is authentically me - If later some parts of how I looked, sounded, thought and felt turned out to be unfitting, I can discard that which I feel is unfitting, keep the rest, and invent something new for that which I discarded -
I can see, hear, feel, think, say, and do.
I have the tools to survive, to be close to others, to be productive,
and to make sense and order out of the world of people and things outside of me -
I own me, and therefore I can engineer me -

The Kit of Things That Works




There are times of crisis where we need additional care. Where we are the ones who can love and nurture ourselves through hardships. Yet in the midst of a raging storm, it’s hard to remember the resources we have. In an attempt to address just this problem, I suggest assembling a Kit of Things That Work (When Nothing Else Does). Cary Tennis first made this suggestion in his advice column on Salon.com and I have used it ever since.

During times of relative peace we can add to tool kits so that we may better attend to ourselves when times are tough. We do this when we practice healthy choices and create routines that nurture us. We do this not only because it helps in the here and now, but also as a way of training for difficult times. When we have set up practices that nurture our souls, create lives that are rich and true to who we are, when difficulties arise (which they are 100% certain to) we have a solid foundation to flail on.

This intervention is a literal interpretation of the metaphorical tool kit we assemble during therapy. The visualizations, the deep breathing, the corrective thoughts, the affirmations, whatever tricks you’ve learned to help yourself through difficult times. The two kits go hand in hand, but it helps at times to have physical objects to center and ground you. To remind you that you are a physical being present on this earth-- and not, much my surprise, a walking head or an accumulation of neuroses.

So we begin by getting a nice medium sized box. It shouldn’t distress you when you look at it. It should be nice enough that when you’re walking through your house you don’t feel the urge to toss it out with the garbage. Not just because you do not want to lose this valuable kit and all that’s held within, but also because you deserve to have beautiful things around you. Your mental health deserves much more than junk for a home. You may want to decorate the box. To shower it with touches of what makes you happy or feel most yourself.
I decorated my box with uplifting quotes from my favorite authors. Words speak to me in powerful ways. You may find that colors, collages, pictures, or something else entirely works better for you. The point is to make the box appealing to you. Something that you’d like to open, because it contains things that you love.

Then start putting things into the box that you might need in times of crisis. Think of the things that sooth you. What loosens the grip of anxiety within you? What smells, sights, textures make you melt? Is there a picture or a poem that has the power to change your mood, even for a moment? There’s no right object or set of objects to put in the box. What will make it right is that it works for you.

Here’s a list of what I included in my box, just to give you some ideas.
·         God’s Inbox Essay by Anne Lamott (I read it whenever I’m feeling anxious, it helps more than words can say).
·         A letter of recommendation from my old pastor.
·         Silly putty
·         A rose-shaped pine cone
·         A blue butterfly
·         A picture of me at 3 years old
·         A picture from my trip to Italy
·         A picture of me with my feet in the Mediterranean
·         Two vanilla scented votive candles
·         Dried flowers
·         Tissues (to give myself permission to cry)

Then write a letter from yourself today to you in crisis. Write it as if you are tending to an old friend who’s going through a very rough period. You know yourself better than anyone else, what could motivate you to keep going? What could encourage you to invest in life fully and openly? What words might make you feel safe enough to sink into whatever you’re feeling and know that it cannot destroy you? Put that in the letter. Don’t worry if the words don’t come perfectly; know that the effort to comfort yourself is enough, and is a sign of the love you lavish on yourself.

I like the idea of labeling the box. You can call it whatever you like. “Kit of Things That Work”, “My Mental Health Tool Box”, “Crisis Box”, “My Breakdown Kit” anything that you like. This way when you’re really losing it, and you think you’re gone for good this time, and you don’t even remember what the box is for, you can read those words and at least get a hint of where to start.

Before "I do" do this: Premarital Counseling


Why Premarital Counseling?

Premarital counseling is a great way to focus on starting your marriage off on the right foot. While we often get bogged down in the details of planning the wedding, it’s easy for us to forget what the wedding is for: starting a life together as a new family. Premarital counseling is not designed to assess whether or not you and your partner should be getting married; you are the only ones with the knowledge and the understanding of your relationship to make that decision. Premarital counseling is designed to facilitate the discussions you are already having about what’s next as you step in to married life. In our sessions we focus on your strengths as a couple, as well as consider areas for growth and what ways we can strengthen your relationship to give you the best possible start as you begin your journey as a married couple.

What to expect from Premarital Counseling?

The substance of premarital counseling varied depending on who is providing it. A pastor, rabbi, or other spiritual leader will use the lens of their religious background while working with you as a couple. Many churches require premarital counseling before performing the wedding. 

In both religious and secular settings premarital counseling will usually include some sort of relationship assessment, communication skill building, and a discussion about the marital expectations of each partner. Generally, premarital counseling takes somewhere between 3 and 6 sessions.  In my practice, I use the following as a general outline for premarital counseling, though I tend to customize the process for each couples’ specific needs.

·          Your Relationship

o   Initially, I like to focus on getting to know you as individuals and in your relationship. We’ll explore your comfort levels working with each other, with a counselor, and as a team. This will be your opportunity to teach me about your relationship and share brought you together and what keeps you together.  We’ll discuss the strengths of your relationship, your concerns for the future, and any goals you have for your relationship. At this point we will begin to review the results from your assessment.

·         Communication 

o   Communication is key to developing a healthy relationship and starting your marriage off on the right foot. At this time we will discuss each partner’s communication style and how communicate with our partner’s needs and style in mind. Working through communication we will strengthen the alliance already established within your relationship. We will also practice healthy communication and build skills for resolving conflicts and fighting fair.

·          Expectations

o   We all come into relationships with different expectations about how life will be in a marriage. Many of these expectations we got from our families. During this time in counseling we will address each partner’s expectations of the marriage and also deal with practical issues like family and financial planning. This allows both partners to be on the same page regarding the nitty gritty of day to day living in a relationship.

What to expect when you're expecting to meet me as your new therapist


Taking the first step can to talk to a therapist can be intimidating. The process of seeing a therapist for the first time can seem odd and complicated. Generally, when we call a therapist we are in the middle of a difficult time in our own lives; dealing with something new and unknown can be a challenge when we have a lot on our plate already. In order to help make this process as safe and straightforward as possible, let me shed some light on what you can expect from me.
Making contact:
The first step is making the call. To get in touch with me you can call my voice mail at (925) 337.5029 or email me at sarahgjessop@yahoo.com and let me know that you are interested in therapy. I will give you a call back and we will talk for a few minutes, discuss your interest in therapy and how I might be able to help. At this point, if you feel ready, we will set up an appointment to meet.
Forms:
There are usually a number of forms to complete before your first session. In an effort to make the best use of your time, try to come in 5 minutes before your session to fill out the paperwork. Normally I'll leave the forms for you in the waiting room. 
First session:
Generally sessions are 50 - 60 minutes in length, although some sessions can run 90 minutes or 120 minutes depending on the type of therapy. If a session were planned for a time over the usual 50-60 minutes, we would discuss and agree upon the change prior to the appointment.  
The purpose of the first session is for us to get to know each other. I would love to hear your story, to learn about what prompted you to seek therapy and to talk about your goals and visions for your future. You will have a chance to see my office, to get to know me and to hear more about how I do therapy.
Length of therapy:
After a few sessions, if you like, I will be able to give you an idea of the length of therapy to achieve your goal. The amount of time expected for therapy depends on a number of factors: your reason for seeking treatment, the therapeutic techniques and approach being used, social and environmental factors, as well as your personal involvement in the therapeutic process outside of the session. If you want to speed up your therapy process, I can give you homework assignments to do between sessions, suggest books to read and ask you to reach out for support from additional sources. As with any other process, you get out of therapy what you put in to it. And also as with any other natural process it does take time.
Payment:
Payment for the session can be made through check  or cash. Generally, I collect the fee at the end of our session. The fee per individual session is between $40 and $80 based on ability to pay. If these rates are not affordable for you, talk to me about scholarship rates or referrals. 
Why Psychotherapy?
There are many reasons for seeking therapy. Some people choose to come to therapy because there is something in their life that they would like to change or achieve. Some have had a life-transition for which they would like support and guidance. And some come in response to some kind of loss (loved one, relationship, job, physical health, etc). Whatever the reason, I am here to to help without judgment.
Preparation for Psychotherapy?

It is important to me that you be fully informed regarding the nature of treatment, the fees involved, and the expectations and requirements of treatment. The psychotherapy relationship will only begin once you have signed the consent.
